Okinawa Region

Japan's subtropical archipelago of coral reefs, Ryukyuan heritage, and jungle islands stretching toward Taiwan

Okinawa is Japan's southernmost region — a chain of over 160 islands with its own Ryukyuan culture, turquoise waters, and a tropical pace far removed from mainland Japan. This guide covers the region's island groups, best travel seasons, and itinerary options to help you plan beyond the obvious.

Okinawa is Japan's southernmost region — a 1,000-kilometre arc of more than 160 islands strung between Kyushu and Taiwan. It is geographically, climatically and culturally distinct from the rest of Japan: a former independent kingdom (the Ryukyu, until annexed in 1879) with its own language, music and architecture, set against coral reefs, white-sand beaches and a subtropical jungle. The Okinawa Prefecture covers the entire region; its capital Naha hosts the reconstructed Shuri Castle and is the gateway to the wilder outer islands — the Kerama Islands, Miyako Island, Ishigaki Island, Kohama Island, and the UNESCO-listed jungle of Iriomote Island.

FAQ

How do I get to Okinawa from mainland Japan?

Direct flights from Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Sapporo to Naha Airport take 2–3 hours. The Kerama Islands are reached by ferry from Naha's Tomarin terminal (35–60 min). Miyako Island, Ishigaki Island and the Yaeyama group all have airports — onward flights from Naha or direct from Tokyo.

Is Okinawa worth visiting outside of summer?

Yes — winter is one of the best times. Temperatures stay mild, prices drop sharply, the Kerama Islands offer humpback whale watching from January, and Okinawa's cherry blossoms bloom weeks before anywhere else in Japan.

How many days do you need in Okinawa?

Five days for the main island plus a Kerama Islands day trip. A week minimum to reach Miyako Island or the Yaeyama group (Ishigaki Island, Iriomote Island, Taketomi). Ten days lets you sample multiple island groups without rushing.

Which Okinawan island is the best?

Depends on what you want. Main island Okinawa for history and accessibility. Kerama Islands for day-trip beaches. Miyako Island for the bluest water. Iriomote Island for jungle, mangroves and the rarest wildlife in Japan.

Is Okinawa part of Japan?

Politically yes, since 1879. Culturally it's its own world: a former independent Ryukyu Kingdom with its own language (Uchinaaguchi), cuisine, music, dress and architecture. The Ryukyuan identity is still strongly felt across the islands.

What is Okinawa best known for?

Beaches, coral reefs and diving; Ryukyuan culture and Shuri Castle; the WWII Battle of Okinawa and its memorial sites; one of the world's highest concentrations of centenarians; and a distinctive cuisine built around pork, seaweed and the bitter melon goya.
