Tokyo’s most refined Edo stroll garden — six elements of waka poetry rendered in stone, water and pine, with evening light-ups for sakura and koyo.

Rikugien (‘Six Poems Garden’) was completed in 1702 by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, an advisor to the fifth shogun. Each of the garden’s 88 named features references a Heian or Manyoshu poem — strolling it is reading classical Japanese literature in three dimensions. ¥300 entry, hours 09:00–17:00; evening light-ups for early-April sakura (Shidare-zakura weeping cherry) and mid-November koyo extend hours to 21:00 with separate ¥900 ticket.

What to Expect

The garden is built around a central pond with two islands, ringed by hills, stone arrangements and a tea house. Every feature has a poetic name — Tsutsujichaya, Fukiagechaya, Mateba-no-iso. The west side holds the famous Shidare-zakura (weeping cherry), planted around 1750 and illuminated nightly during the late-March bloom. The east side has the maple grove that turns fully red mid-November, also illuminated for two weeks.

Allow 90 minutes for the full perimeter, 2 hours during light-up. The Tsutsuji-no-chaya tea house serves matcha (¥600 with wagashi) overlooking the pond.

Consider This Instead

For a sea-side Edo garden with a tidal pond and Sumida-river ferry, head to Hama-rikyu Garden in Shiodome — different aesthetic (Edo coastal residence vs daimyo poetry retreat), same era. For Tokyo’s most central garden experience, Shinjuku Gyoen bundles three garden styles in one ¥500 ticket.
