Umi Jigoku

Few natural spectacles in Japan stop visitors quite as abruptly as Umi Jigoku: Sea Hell. The pond's extraordinary cobalt-blue water, coloured by dissolved iron sulfate, sits at a near-constant 98 °C and plunges some 200 metres into the earth, a reminder that Beppu's tranquil gardens rest atop something genuinely primal. Formed after the eruption of Mount Tsurumi, the spring is set within a landscaped garden that rewards a slow wander, and a museum added in 2022 offers deeper context for the geology at work beneath your feet.

When to go

Umi Jigoku opens daily at 8 AM, and arriving close to opening time tends to offer a quieter, more atmospheric experience before tour groups arrive mid-morning. The steam rises most dramatically on cool mornings, making autumn and winter visits particularly evocative.
