Tucked into Beppu's atmospheric Kannawa district, the Jigoku Onsen Museum is one of those quietly rewarding finds that rewards the curious traveller willing to step beyond the famous coloured pools. Four immersive walk-through scenes trace the remarkable subterranean odyssey of rainwater: a journey of roughly fifty years underground before it finally rises as scalding hot-spring water. Along the way, the museum unpacks why these billowing vents were once regarded with dread and named 'hells.' Afterwards, the in-house 50CAFE offers a reflective pause with views over the rising steam.

When to go

The museum opens daily from 9 am to 6 pm, so an early-morning visit lets you arrive ahead of day-tour groups and enjoy the steamy Kannawa streetscape at its most atmospheric. Cooler months lend the drifting vapour an especially dramatic quality.

“I didn't know this palce existed but it's super fun! They have the info and quiz available in English so would definitely recommend for tourists. I lived in Beppu for years but learned new things about the onsen I never knew! The staff are super friendly and helpful!”— Bethany Manning, Google review
