Beppu Jigoku (Hells of Beppu)

The Hells of Beppu are among Japan's most dramatic natural spectacles: seven geothermal springs in the Kannawa district, each with its own distinct character. Cobalt-blue Umi Jigoku shimmers at nearly 98 degrees Celsius, while the iron-red Chinoike Jigoku glows like something from another world entirely. These springs are maintained for viewing rather than bathing: a tradition rooted in local chronicles stretching back over a thousand years. Four of the seven hold designation as National Scenic Spots, and several invite you to rest weary feet in complimentary foot baths along the way.

When to go

The hells are open every day from 8 am to 5 pm, so arriving at opening gives you the clearest steam and the quietest atmosphere. Cooler months (autumn and winter) heighten the visual drama as geothermal mist billows against crisp air.
