Jumonji Viewpoint
A plateau perch above Beppu Bay, where city lights earn national recognition
Perched on a plateau beyond Myoban onsen in northern Beppu, Jumonjibaru Observatory rewards those willing to venture a little further. The panorama sweeps across Beppu Bay to Oita city and the Kunisaki Peninsula, and on a clear day the outline of Shikoku emerges on the horizon. Free to visit and open at all hours, it carries a quiet prestige: its night view is registered on both the Japan Night View Heritage list and the 100 Selected Night Views of Japan.
When to go
The observatory is accessible around the clock, every day of the year, so timing is entirely yours to choose. Clear winter nights tend to offer the sharpest air and the most brilliant city lights, while dusk arrivals let you watch Beppu Bay shift from gold to deep indigo before the illuminated panorama takes hold.
