Roppongi

Roppongi was post-WWII Tokyo’s gaijin nightlife zone — embassies and bars north of the freeway. The 2003 Roppongi Hills + 2007 Tokyo Midtown developments turned the area upmarket, anchoring three major museums (the ‘Art Triangle’) and the city’s most polished mall food. Nightlife survives on the back streets, art and observation decks dominate the day.

The Art Triangle: Mori Art Museum on the 53F of Mori Tower (rotating Yayoi Kusama / Murakami / contemporary headliners), National Art Center Tokyo (free Kisho Kurokawa wave-facade building, ¥1,500 special exhibitions), Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo Midtown (Japanese craft + lacquer). Two malls (Roppongi Hills + Tokyo Midtown) hold the food. The 2024 Azabudai Hills opened teamLab Borderless on the south edge.
