Ichibangai Shotengai

Ichibangai Shotengai (川越一番街商店街) is one of Kawagoe's most characterful market streets, threading through the heart of a city long nicknamed Koedo: Little Edo. The shotengai's low-slung shopfronts and unhurried pace make it a natural complement to the grander kurazukuri warehouse district nearby, offering local goods, snacks, and the kind of everyday commerce that keeps a neighbourhood genuinely alive rather than merely preserved.

When to go

The street is open around the clock every day, so early mornings reward those who prefer calm: shutters may still be rising, but the atmosphere is unhurried and the light is soft. Weekday afternoons tend to be quieter than weekend visits. Autumn foliage season draws more visitors to Kawagoe generally, so mornings are your best ally then.
