Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Palace

Kawagoe Castle has stood watch over the Kantō plain since 1457, but it is the Honmaru Palace (rebuilt in 1848), that survives to tell the story most vividly. The entrance hall and great hall speak quietly of ceremony and rank, while the relocated chief retainers' quarters hint at the layered world behind the domain's formal façade. As the seat of a 170,000-koku domain and guardian of Edo's northern approach, this was no provincial backwater: its architecture carries real political weight.

When to go

The palace opens daily from 9:00, with last entry at 16:30, and is closed on Mondays, the fourth Friday of each month, and over the New Year period. Arriving early in the morning keeps the rooms unhurried, and the quieter shoulder seasons of spring and autumn reward a longer, unhurried look.
