Nunobiki Herb Gardens and Ropeway
Seventy-five thousand plants, twelve gardens, and Kobe at your feet
Nunobiki Herb Gardens unfurl across the hillside above Kobe in twelve themed garden areas, home to some 200 varieties of herbs and flowers: around 75,000 plants in all. Reached by ropeway, the ascent alone rewards visitors with sweeping views over the city and the bay below. Promoted as Japan's largest herb garden, the site stages seasonal highlights including a spring Rose & Lavender Fair and a weekend Herb Marche running from March into early July, making each visit feel shaped by the time of year.
When to go
The gardens are open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Arriving early in the morning gives you the quietest paths and the freshest blooms, while late afternoon light softens the hillside beautifully. Spring and early summer bring the most vivid colour, but something is flowering in every season.
