Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens & Ropeway

Perched on the slopes above Kobe, Nunobiki Herb Gardens spreads across twelve distinct garden areas planted with around 75,000 herbs and flowers representing some 200 varieties, making it Japan's largest herb garden. The journey is half the pleasure: gondolas on the Kobe Nunobiki Ropeway depart roughly every 30 seconds, offering sweeping views of the city and Osaka Bay as you ascend. Once at the top, the gardens unfold in a series of themed terraces where lavender, rosemary, and seasonal blooms compete for attention.

When to go

The gardens reward a weekday visit when the terraces are quietest. On Saturdays and Sundays the ropeway runs until 8:15 PM, making an early-evening ascent a fine option: soft light flatters the flower beds and the city below begins to glow. Weekday hours close at 4:45 PM, so aim to arrive by mid-morning to allow a leisurely wander across all twelve areas.
