Hakodate Gokoku Shrine

Hakodate Gokoku Shrine was founded in 1869 to honour the government soldiers who fell in the Battle of Hakodate: the final clash of the Boshin War. Set on the verdant slope ascending Mount Hakodate, the shrine rewards those willing to seek it out with expansive, unhurried grounds and a striking view down Gokoku-jinja-zaka, the avenue of approach framed by its torii gate. Few visitors make it this far from the city centre, lending the place a contemplative stillness that feels genuinely earned.

When to go

The shrine is open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM. Autumn brings rich foliage to the hillside, while summer mornings offer cool air and soft light along the slope. Arriving early in the day makes the most of the quieter atmosphere this hidden corner of Hakodate naturally affords.
