- Take Mount Hakodate at dawn, not sunset. The view is identical, the wait is zero, and the bay catches gold light differently from any photo you've seen.
- Stay in Yunokawa Onsen, not waterfront. 12-min tram from downtown, sea-view onsen ryokans, and you'll meet locals at the foot bath.
- Walk the Suehirocho tram-stop neighbourhood. Preserved Meiji-era brick warehouses with almost zero foot traffic. Start where Motomachi ends.
- Skip the morning market on weekends. Tuesday–Friday between 7am and 9am is the best window: peak freshness, lowest tourist volume.
- Hike Mount Hakodate instead of taking the ropeway. A 2-km forest trail from Hakodate Park reaches the same summit, and it's empty even on summer weekends.
