Oita Agricultural Park
Free-admission seasonal blooms and countryside calm near Beppu
Tucked into the rural landscapes of Oita Prefecture, Oita Agricultural Culture Park (affectionately known as Ruru Park) offers a genuinely unhurried escape from the onsen bustle of nearby Beppu. Admission is free, and the grounds reward every season differently: delicate nemophila carpets arrive in spring, while late summer brings the burnished crimson spheres of kochia. Beyond the flowers, a small animal zoo, a flower-and-insect museum, lakeside playgrounds, and rentable bicycles and boats make this a place worth lingering in. Cottages and a campground mean you can stay overnight and catch the quieter edges of the day.
When to go
Spring draws visitors for the nemophila bloom, and late summer for the kochia. For a more peaceful experience, aim for weekday mornings: the park opens at 9:30 AM and is closed on Tuesdays. Arriving early gives you the gardens largely to yourself before families and day-trippers arrive.
“Great, free outing with the family! Huge flower park surrounding a giant reservoir. Rental bikes, lots of paths and picnic areas, large fields to play in, rental paddle boats, a mini-Zoo, a pretty dangerous jungle gym contraption; this place has it all!”— matt saunders, Google review
