Hachiman Asami Shrine

Tucked within easy reach of JR Beppu Station, Hachiman Asami Shrine has watched over this steam-wreathed city since 1196. Its grounds reward slow exploration: a camphor tree of legendary age casts deep shade over the stone path, while the paired meoto cedars (bound together in spirit if not in bark) invite couples to pass between them hand in hand. At the Mantaro Shimizu spring, visitors may draw the clear water and carry a little of the shrine's calm home with them. Few spots in Beppu feel this unhurried.

When to go

The shrine opens daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Mornings tend to be the gentlest time to visit: light filters through the old trees before the day fully stirs. Autumn foliage and fresh spring greenery both suit the grounds well.
