Makishi Public Market
Naha's living larder: fresh Okinawan seafood, butchers, and a cook-it-upstairs tradition
Makishi Public Market has been the beating heart of Naha's machigwa market district since 1950, and it remains as vital to neighbourhood life as it is compelling to visitors. The ground floor is a tightly packed theatre of Okinawan produce: vivid reef fish, cuts of pork unique to the island's cuisine, and vendors who have worked the same stalls for generations. What makes Makishi genuinely special, though, is the arrangement upstairs: second-floor restaurants will take whatever you've just bought below and cook it to order, turning a shopping trip into an unhurried lunch or dinner.
When to go
The market is open from early morning through to the evening, so an early arrival rewards you with the fullest selection of fresh catch and a quieter atmosphere before the midday rush. Weekday mornings are particularly calm: a good window to browse at your own pace alongside the locals who depend on it daily.
