Irinoazana (Observation Deck)

Tucked into the western ramparts of Shuri Castle, Iri no Azana (also known as Shimasoe Azana) is one of Naha's quieter rewards. Sitting at roughly 130 metres elevation, this ancient watchtower once raised the flags of the Ryukyu Kingdom and rang a bell to mark the hours for the castle and the city below. Today it sits within the park's free-access area, meaning you can reach it without a castle admission ticket, yet most visitors walk straight past it. From the platform, Naha's rooftops and working port unfold beneath you, and on a clear day the silhouette of the Kerama Islands drifts on the horizon.

When to go

The deck is open daily from 8 AM, so an early-morning visit rewards you with soft light over the port and far fewer fellow travellers. Winter days tend to bring the clearest air and the sharpest views towards the Keramas, while the golden hour before the 7:30 PM close is equally atmospheric.
