Okaido Shopping Street

Okaido is central Matsuyama's principal shopping street: a long-established covered arcade lined with clothing boutiques, restaurants, and entertainment venues, all overseen by its own merchants' association. Far from a sanitised tourist corridor, it remains a genuinely local thoroughfare where residents shop, eat, and linger. The adjacent Matsuchika Town underground mall extends the precinct further, making this the natural hub of the city's retail life.

When to go

Summer brings the street to life most vividly: Saturday night markets run from mid-June through late July, drawing crowds for food, craft goods, and an easy festive atmosphere. Across the rest of the year, handmade-craft markets, seasonal sales, and a bread festival punctuate the calendar. Early weekday mornings offer a quieter, more unhurried experience of the arcade at its most everyday.
