Nakamachi Shopping Street Promotion Association

Nakamachi Street traces its origins to the old Zenkoji pilgrimage road that wound through Matsumoto's castle town some four hundred years ago. Today its most arresting feature remains the same: a continuous run of kura storehouses (thick-walled, white-plastered buildings spanning the Edo through Taisho eras), that give the street a quietly theatrical atmosphere you won't find in many Japanese shopping districts. The merchants' association has preserved that character carefully, filling the ground floors with traditional craft shops and local restaurants rather than chain outlets.

When to go

Sunday is the street's most rewarding day, when traffic is excluded and craft fairs bring additional makers outside. Arriving early, close to opening, keeps the pace unhurried. Any season rewards a visit, though the whitewashed kura facades look especially striking against autumn colour or a light winter frost.
