Shiawasenomura Japanese garden

Tucked into the hills above Kobe within the Shiawasenomura welfare and recreation park, this 1.4-hectare pond-stroll garden is one of the city's most unhurried discoveries. A 2,000-square-metre pond anchors the composition, fed by a waterfall and crossed by stone and wooden bridges. A water stage and a traditional tea house (used for tea ceremonies and ikebana) lend the space a gentle cultural depth. In spring, cherry blossoms are illuminated after dusk; in autumn, the foliage takes its turn in the evening light. The garden also serves as a restorative retreat for patients of the adjoining rehabilitation hospital, a reminder of its quietly purposeful heart.

When to go

The garden opens daily from 8 am, making an early-morning visit especially rewarding: light filters softly through the trees before the day gathers pace. Spring and autumn bring the most vivid seasonal colour, with evening illuminations adding a rare, contemplative quality to both seasons.
