Matsūra Historical Museum

Nagasaki Prefecture's oldest museum occupies the Tsurugamine residence, a graceful 1893 family home that the Matsura clan (rulers of the Hirado domain since the Kamakura period) eventually opened to the world. Inside, the collection moves between two compelling threads: the records of Hirado's remarkable foreign-trade era, including rare Christianity-related documents, and the refined literary and artistic holdings of Edo-period lord Matsura Seizan. The Kanun-tei tea room on the grounds offers a quiet pause after browsing the heirlooms. Few visitors outside Japan have found their way here, which makes each room feel like a private discovery.

When to go

The museum welcomes visitors every day from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, so an early-morning arrival lets you move through the residence in near-solitude. Autumn foliage and spring blossoms both frame the grounds beautifully, though any season rewards a slow visit.
