Himeji City Science Museum
One of the world's largest planetarium domes, right in the shadow of Himeji Castle
The Himeji City Science Museum offers a genuinely immersive encounter with nature, science, and space through hands-on experiment devices, authentic specimens, and regular staff-led science shows and gallery talks. Its centrepiece is a 27-metre planetarium dome that ranks among the largest in the world, where a full canopy of stars unfolds alongside live commentary from the museum's own specialists: a step well beyond the typical recorded narration.
When to go
The museum opens daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, closing on Tuesdays. Arriving early in the day gives you the quietest conditions for the hands-on galleries, while weekday mornings tend to be the most relaxed overall. Check the planetarium schedule in advance, as show slots fill quickly at weekends.
“Very interactive for kids. No English but very helpful staff! Not easy to get to without a personal vehicle but worth the work.”— Timothy Michels, Google review
