Hakuryū Shrine

Hakuryū Shrine sits quietly on the shore of Lake Ashi, a small but striking sanctuary dedicated to a white dragon deity. Where most of Hakone's sacred architecture blazes in vermilion, Hakuryū stands apart: its torii gate and shrine buildings rendered in white, lending the site an unusually serene, otherworldly quality. Closely linked to the nearby Kuzuryū Shrine forest Hongu, it has become a natural stop for those tracing the lake's network of dragon-god sites, drawing visitors drawn to both its spiritual atmosphere and its singular aesthetic.

When to go

The shrine is open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Early morning visits reward the patient traveller: lake mist lingers longest in the first hours after opening, softening the landscape and lending the white shrine an almost ethereal quality. Autumn foliage and spring haze each offer their own quiet drama along the waterfront.

“Too bad there is no sign at the beginning of the trail in Motohakone that tells you about the ¥600 admission fee at the gate after a 30 min. walk accross an old asphalt path. Disappointing.
