Goryokaku Park
Japan's only star-shaped fortress, blooming with 1,500 cherry trees in Hakodate
Goryokaku Park invites you to walk the grounds of Japan's first Western-style fortress: a remarkable five-pointed star completed in 1864 and designated a Special Historic Site in 1952. Built to a European geometric design, the fortification played a pivotal role in the Hakodate War, and its moats and earthworks remain strikingly intact. Inside, a faithful reconstruction of the Hakodate Magistrate's Office brings the site's history to life. The park has welcomed the public since 1914, making it as much a living green space as a monument.
When to go
Spring draws the largest crowds, when roughly 1,500 cherry trees transform the star-shaped moats into a canopy of blossom, arriving at opening time (5:00 AM) rewards early risers with near-empty paths and soft morning light. Summer and autumn offer quieter visits, while the park's open geometry makes it pleasant year-round.
