The day draws together Hida Takayama (a merchant town whose cedar-dark streetscapes have changed little in centuries), and the thatched gassho-zukuri farmhouses of Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO-listed hamlet cradled by mountains. Travelling between the two in a single excursion spares the logistics of overnight planning while still leaving room to linger over morning markets and riverside lanes.
