Shirahige Shrine

Standing sentinel on the western shore of Lake Biwa, Shirahige Shrine is considered the oldest shrine in the ancient Omi region and the head of some 300 Shirahige shrines across Japan. It enshrines Sarutahiko-no-mikoto, and its great vermilion torii (planted in the lake itself) mirrors the famous floating gates of Miyajima, yet draws a fraction of the crowds. The Lake Oumi Shirahigedai observation deck offers the classic framed view, making this one of Shiga Prefecture's most quietly arresting sights.

When to go

With an overtourism score of just 25, Shirahige rewards visits in any season. Early morning light turns the lake glassy and the torii a deep coral, while autumn mist and winter frost lend the scene an almost otherworldly stillness. Arriving at the edges of the day (before tour groups and day-trippers appear) gives you the shrine largely to yourself.
