The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum in Takamatsu, Kagawa, preserves the working world of one of the twentieth century's most singular artists. Set on the grounds where Noguchi lived and created, the museum holds sculptures, tools, and unfinished works in an atmosphere that feels less like an institution than a private dialogue between maker and material. The restraint of the space is itself part of the experience.

When to go

Visits are available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays between 10 am and 4 pm, and advance reservation is required, so plan accordingly. Spring and autumn bring the most agreeable weather to Kagawa, making an outdoor wander through the garden especially rewarding. Arriving at opening time allows the quietest, most contemplative experience.

“Must go.”— Michael LU, Google review
