Nidec Kyoto Tower

At 131 metres, Nidec Kyoto Tower is the city's tallest structure and one of its most immediately recognisable landmarks: visible the moment you step out of JR Kyoto Station, just two minutes' walk away. The observation room sits at 100 metres and offers a full 360-degree panorama across Kyoto's famously low-rise cityscape, where temple rooftops and wooded hillsides stretch to every horizon. The floors below layer on further reasons to linger: restaurants, a curated souvenir market, and a hotel all share the building.

When to go

The tower is open daily from 10 am to 9 pm, making an evening visit particularly rewarding: Kyoto's night lights spread quietly beneath you, the city's modest skyline lending the view an almost meditative calm. Early mornings after opening offer a gentler pace before the day's visitors arrive.
