Kifune Shrine

Tucked into the cedar-shaded valley of Kibune, north of Kyoto, Kifune Shrine feels genuinely apart from the city: a place where stone lanterns line a mossy stairway and a cold mountain stream runs alongside the approach. When to go

The shrine is open from 6:00, and arriving early in the morning (before the valley fully wakes) gives you the stone steps largely to yourself. The summer months (May through November) carry the longest opening hours. Autumn colour in the surrounding hills makes this season particularly atmospheric.
