Gojikken Nagaya - Kanazawa castle

Stretching between two formidable turrets along Kanazawa Castle's inner precinct, the Gojikken Nagaya is a two-storey storehouse corridor built to defend the Ninomaru: its walls still punctuated by stone-drop openings once readied against attack. Originally raised in 1632 and lost to fire in 1881, it was brought back in 2001 as the park's inaugural restoration, pieced together from Edo-period drawings, old photographs, and careful excavation. The result is a rare example of traditional timber castle construction realised with modern scholarship.

When to go

The site opens daily at 9:00 AM and closes at 4:30 PM, so an early morning visit rewards you with quieter corridors and softer light filtering across the pale leadite walls. Spring cherry blossom season and autumn foliage draw larger crowds to Kanazawa Castle Park, making weekday mornings the most peaceful time to linger.
