Perched atop Miyajima's 535-metre sacred peak, Mount Misen Observatory delivers one of western Japan's most celebrated views: a sweeping arc of island-dotted water stretching toward the mountains of Shikoku, recognised with three stars in the Michelin Green Guide. The observatory building itself is worth the journey: rebuilt in 2013 by Hiroshima-born architect Hiroshi Sambuichi, it was conceived around the quiet act of sitting still, letting the breeze and shifting light do their work. Reach the summit by ropeway and a short 30-minute hike, or earn the view with a two-hour climb from the pier.

When to go

The observatory is open daily from 10 AM to 4 PM, so an early arrival makes the most of the morning light before haze builds over the sea. Autumn colour and spring mist each lend the panorama a distinct character, and the final hour before closing tends to draw fewer visitors than midday.

“After riding the ropeway, you still have to walk and hike like 20 - 30 minutes before reaching this place. It's worth it because it's so beautiful”— Febrizky Ramadhan, Google review
