Himeji Park

Himeji Park wraps around one of Japan's most celebrated National Treasures, spreading across 68 hectares within the castle's specially designated historic site. Far more than a backdrop for the famous white keep, the park brings together the Koko-en garden, Himeji City Zoo, a city museum of art, a prefectural museum of history and the Japanese Castle Research Center: all within a single, walkable precinct. The open lawns of Shiromidai Park to the east of the keep offer quieter vantage points away from the main approach.

When to go

The park is open around the clock every day, making early-morning and evening visits particularly rewarding: the castle is at its most atmospheric in soft light, with far fewer visitors. Spring cherry blossom and autumn foliage are the most popular seasons; arriving at opening time for the individual attractions within the park helps you make the most of both.
