Tochoji Temple

Tochoji Temple carries a remarkable weight of history within its modest Hakata surroundings. Founded by the monk Kūkai (revered as Kōbō Daishi) around 806 following his studies in Tang China, it is regarded as Japan's first esoteric Buddhist temple. Through the Edo period it served as the family temple of the Kuroda clan, lending it a quiet prestige that lingers to this day. Its Setsubun festival, traced back to 1425, holds the distinction of being Fukuoka's oldest: a living thread connecting the city to its medieval past.

When to go

Tochoji is open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:45 PM, giving you a generous window to visit at your own pace. Early mornings tend to feel especially still and contemplative. The Setsubun season in early February brings ceremonial atmosphere worth seeking out if your timing allows.
