Shikaumi Shrine

Perched on Shikanoshima island just off the Fukuoka coast, Shikaumi Shrine enshrines the three Watatsumi sea deities venerated by the Azumi, the ancient seafaring people who once commanded northern Kyushu's waters. The grounds hold quiet wonders: more than a thousand votive deer antlers line the approach, and sacred turtle stones sit among the trees: remnants of a living mythology stretching back to at least the seventh century. Legend ties the shrine's founding to Empress Jingu, who reputedly stopped here after a safe return from a Korean campaign.

When to go

The shrine opens daily from early morning, making the first hour after 5:30 AM a particularly peaceful time to visit before day-trippers arrive from the city. Any season rewards a visit, though spring and autumn bring gentle island light that suits the atmosphere well.
