Fukuoka Prefecture Gokoku Shrine

Fukuoka Prefecture Gokoku Shrine occupies a quietly powerful corner of Fukuoka City, set alongside Ohori Park and the old Fukuoka Castle ruins. Dedicated since the Meiji era to those who fell in Japan's wars, it carries a weight of remembrance that feels distinct from the city's lively pace just beyond its treeline. The approach is announced by a remarkable 13-metre torii of raw, unpainted timber (said to be Japan's largest wooden torii) whose unvarnished grain gives it an elemental, almost ancient gravity. Each August, the Mitama Matsuri transforms the grounds as some 6,000 lanterns are lit to honour the enshrined souls.

When to go

The shrine opens daily from 9 am to 5 pm, making early morning visits (when light filters softly through the trees) particularly atmospheric. August brings the luminous Mitama Matsuri, a rare and moving spectacle worth planning around.
