Japan ist eines der bergigsten Länder der Erde — drei Viertel der Landesfläche sind bewaldetes Terrain, viel davon vulkanisch, viel davon Nationalpark. Die Städte liegen in einem dünnen Küstenstreifen; alles andere ist Berge, Täler, Schluchten, heiße Quellen und Strände. Das Verkehrsnetz reicht tiefer in die Natur als in den meisten Ländern, was bedeutet, dass man einen ernsthaften Berg-Tagesausflug aus Tokio oder Kyoto ohne Auto machen kann.

Die vier Flaggschiff-Nationalparks

  • Daisetsuzan (Hokkaido) — Japans größter Nationalpark, Alpenplateau in Zentral-Hokkaido. Asahidake-Seilbahn, Onsen-Dörfer, Koyo zuerst in Japan Ende September.
  • Kamikochi (Chubu) — Alpental in den Nordalpen, zugänglich 15. Apr – 15. Nov. Holzhängebrücken, Flusswanderungen, keine Autos erlaubt.
  • Yakushima (Kyushu) — UNESCO subtropische Regenwald-Insel. Jomon-sugi Zeder (~3.000 Jahre alt), Mononoke-no-Mori inspiriert von Studio Ghibli.
  • Iriomote (Okinawa) — wilde Dschungelinsel, Mangroven-Flüsse, der einzige Ort, um die bedrohte Iriomote-Katze zu sehen.

Tagesausflugfähige Natur von Großstädten

  • Aus Tokio — Mt. Takao (¥440 Hin und Rück, 1 Std von Shinjuku), Hakone (Owakudani-Vulkan), Nikko (Kegon-Wasserfall + Lake Chuzenji).
  • Aus Kyoto — Arashiyama-Bambushain + Sagano scenic railway, Kibune-Bergstrom-Restaurants.
  • Aus Osaka — Koyasan (heiliger buddhistischer Berg), Mt. Yoshino (Kirschblüten-Berg).
  • Aus Hiroshima — Sandankyo-Schlucht, Miyajima Mt. Misen.
  • Aus Sapporo — Jozankei Onsen-Tal, Lake Shikotsu.

Wanderinfrastruktur

Wege sind gut markiert, Berghütten sind sauber und laufen auf einem Reservierungssystem (¥9.000–12.000/Nacht mit zwei Mahlzeiten). Die offizielle Mt.-Fuji-Klettersaison ist 1. Juli – 10. September; außerhalb sind die Wege geschlossen und gefährlich. Mehrtägige Wanderungen auf den Routen Kumano Kodo (Wakayama) und Nakasendo (Chubu) sind ausländerfreundlich mit englischer Beschilderung.

Strände

Okinawa hat die tropischen Strände (Miyako, Ishigaki). Festland-Japan hat gute Surfer- und Pazifikstrände (Shonan, Chiba), und die Seite des Japanischen Meers (Niigata, Tottori) hat die leeren endlosen Strände, zu denen japanische Reisende gehen.

Vulkanische / Onsen-Landschaften

Aso (Kyushu) — befahrbare Caldera 25 km breit. Sakurajima (Kagoshima) — aktiver Vulkan vor der Haustür einer Stadt. Owakudani (Hakone) — schwefelhaltiges Tal, über das du eine Seilbahn fahren kannst. Daisetsuzan (Hokkaido) — alpine Onsen über der Baumgrenze.
