Skip the Crowds
Three small moves that take you off the festival circuit.
- Stay in Maruyama, not Susukino. Trams reach the centre in 15 min; bakeries, parks and izakayas locals actually use replace the neon and the crowds.
- Visit Hokkaido Shrine on a weekday morning. Walk in via the back entrance from Maruyama Park — completely different from the New Year experience.
- Skip Nijo Market for breakfast — go to Curb Market. Almost identical seafood, half the foreigners, just behind Sapporo Station.
- Eat ramen in the south — not Ramen Yokocho. The Yokocho is iconic but tourist-heavy; many of Sapporo's best miso ramen counters are in Toyohira and Shiroishi.
- Take the chairlift up Mount Moiwa instead of the ropeway. Same views, fraction of the wait, locals' choice.

Tips for Visiting
- Pre-book Snow Festival accommodation. Sapporo hotels book out 3–4 months ahead for early February.
- Buy a SAPICA card. Cheaper than single subway/tram fares once you make 3+ trips per day.
- Pack proper winter gear December–March. Sapporo regularly hits -10°C; cotton-only layers are not enough.
- Walk the underground arcades when it snows. The 4-km Sapporo Pole Town and Aurora Town tunnels link Susukino to Odori Park without ever going outside.
- Hokkaido drives left, like the rest of Japan. But mountain roads off Route 230 close in winter — check if you're heading to Jozankei or Niseko.
- The Snow Festival is free but exhausting. Plan it as 90 minutes per visit, ideally one daytime and one nighttime walk; not a half-day session.
- New Chitose Airport has its own attractions. Onsen, ramen alley, anime theatre — useful if you have a long layover.

Sapporo's snow festival pulls ~2 million visitors to giant carved sculptures over 7 days; Yokote's kamakura matsuri is 450 years older, runs just February 14-16, and you actually step INSIDE the snow huts where local children invite you in for sweet amazake. Smaller and dramatically quieter (~500K over a shorter window). Faster from Tokyo too: 3 hours on the Akita Shinkansen.

How do I get to Sapporo from Tokyo?
The fastest route is by air — about 90 minutes from Haneda or Narita to New Chitose Airport. From there, the JR Rapid Airport service reaches Sapporo Station in 37 minutes. The full Tokyo–Sapporo Shinkansen route takes about 7.5 hours and isn't usually worth it unless you're stopping in Hakodate.
How many days do I need in Sapporo?
Two full days for the city itself, three if you want one slow day in Maruyama or the Sapporo Art Park. Add a fourth day if you plan to take a day trip to Otaru or Noboribetsu Onsen.
Is the Sapporo Snow Festival worth visiting?
